WHAT IS ALZHEIMERS ?
About 4 million people in the U.S. alone have Alzheimer's. The actual figures in Asia are still unknown because of lack of accurate surveys due to social circumstances where families don't admit that there might be a sufferer in their family due to embarrassment.
It is an illness that makes it hard for people to remember, think, and use language. It can make them act strange or seem moody. After a while, people with Alzheimer's have a hard time with things like using the phone, cooking or handling money.
Sadly, many people think the early symptoms of Alzheimer's are signs of normal aging. So Alzheimer's is often not diagnosed and treated early.
The disease is more common in older adults. And it affects all races. About 1 in 10 people over the age of 65 have Alzheimer's. As many as 5 in 10 people over the age of 85 have Alzheimer's.
Through research, we are learning more about how the brain is affected in Alzheimer's. We do not yet know how to prevent or cure it. But we do know how to treat its symptoms.
People with Alzheimer's often do better if they start treatment early. Also, treatment may help people keep doing their daily tasks longer.
There is no effective facility or care giving infrastructure in Sri Lanka even now for Alzheimers sufferers.
“The Lanka Alzheimer's Foundation” aims to develop a macro blue print in Sri Lanka to establish an institute that will train “care-givers” and offer early detection facility in its first phase by raising funds and creating awareness projects such as seminars, walks etc….
Colombo Round Table No 1, is actively involved with the Alzheimer's cause.
